Something of a Miracle.

From political prisoner to Sundance winner.

Tibet in Song arriving in theaters.

The message below is from filmmaker Ngawang Choephel. I have watched this film grow from its infancy and it won a special jury prize at Sundance in 2009. Ngawang, a Fullbright Fellow, was arrested inside Tibet for making this film and it took Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, Amnesty International and others a number of years to get him released. Please visit the film’s website to learn more. ~ Ellen Pearlman
Dear Friends,
The moment we have been waiting for is finally here, and I am so glad to be able to share it with you. It has been such a long journey, but now Tibet in Song is finally arriving in theaters. I am very happy to invite you to join us. Thank you for your support through this long and difficult time, and please continue to support the release of the film. It should be a well-deserved time to celebrate the beauty of Tibetan culture and remember the importance of our cause. Please show your support and tell all of your friends, family, and colleagues to join us for the New York City opening.
Best wishes ~Ngawang

Ngawang Choephel’s documentary, Tibet in Song, takes us on an intimate journey inside 21st century Tibet; featuring a live array of endangered indigenous songs sung by Tibetans themselves, and weaving complex stories of raw Tibetan beauty, authoritarian brutality, intense pain, and unwavering resilience in a way never before seen on film. Ngawang, who was arrested by Chinese authorities, and falsely charged with spying while filming folk songs in Tibet, spent nearly 7 years in Chinese prisons as a political prisoner for the making of Tibet in Song. Ngawang’s unique story as filmmaker turned political prisoner guides the film and stands as a testament to the power of music to overcome oppression.

“A superb documentary.” ~ Susan G. Cole, Now Magazine
“Makes a powerful case for culture.” ~ Jennie Punter, Globe and Mail
“The docu’s very existence is something of a miracle.” ~ Peter Debruge, Variety
