“Every morning think as you wake up:
I am alive,
I have a precious human life,
I am not going to waste it.
I am going to use all of my energies to develop myself,
To expand my heart out to others,
To achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.
I am not going to get angry,
Or think badly about others.
I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”
Whether we’re conscious of it or not, all of our actions begin with a motivation. Whether it’s going to the fridge to get a snack or deciding to sell everything and build a yoga retreat center in Iceland, we have some kind of goal in mind.
Most of the time our goals are quite self-oriented. We want ourselves to be happy. We want comfort and security. Although there’s nothing wrong with pursuing our own happiness, it’s also good to expand our motivations to include others.
Try reciting this simple aspiration every morning for a month and see how it changes your attitude, your world view and your general sense of well-being.
