I do! I’ve been a horror movie fan since I was a kid. I have one memory of spending the weekend at my Grandma’s house sometime around eight or nine years old. We were watching TV and the Saturday night movie came on: Piranha.
“Grandma,” I said. “I don’t think I’m allowed to watch this?”
“Why not, mija?” she said matter of factly. “It’s just a movie about fish.”
So we watched.
And I liked it.
The 1978 Piranha was a horror-comedy B-movie, and definitely not the best of it’s kind. But it was fun, and my young self got sucked into the suspense of the “flesh-eating” fish invading the lake.
It was fun to be scared! To be on the edge of my seat. To know the danger wasn’t real, and I could observe it from the comfort of my grandma’s cushy couch.
Anyway, it was edited for TV so it’s not like I saw anything really awful.
At home, my big sister helped fuel my love for horror flicks. She’s the one who really turned me onto them.
We watched the classics: Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween. And my all-time favorite: Clive Barker’s Hellraiser.
Sure, I may have been a little young for that stuff, technically, but when one has an older sibling, one gets exposed to all kinds of cool stuff!
All the stuff we watched at that time was on television, so the films were edited down to be acceptable for network TV. The really gory, gruesome parts were always cut out. Same thing with any sex, nudity or adult language.
When I got a little older, we began to rent stuff on VHS, but by then I had the stomach for it.
To this day, I’m still a sucker for a good horror flick, and I love re-watching the old favorites.
So in the spirit of Halloween and all spooky things, here’s bit fun for all the horror film fanatics!
