As I look to the bare, icy trees
Each eyelash freezes like a branch
Transforming into an iridescent icicle.
As I look to the lights in the windowsill
Formerly suppressed snowflakes
Start falling madly from my heart.
The sparkly crystals land on my tongue
And I nod approvingly at the
Sweetly powdered sugar perfection.
I close my frozen eyelashes, open my snowy heart
And take it all in.
With every exhale,
My breath becomes an enchanting, frosty spell.
The twinkling magic of winter’s wistful beauty
Ushers me deeper, deeper, deeper.
Winter wraps me in her white velvety blanket,
Peace rushes into every slice of my soul.
Lifting me, up, up, up
Calming me down, down, down.
She hands me a perfect moment
Perfectly frozen in time.
So
Even when the cold seems unspeakably cruel
And chills my bones through and through
Even when I’m shivering like mad
And the wind seeps right into my soul
Even when the streets are shiny, glazed with ice
Yes, despite this
Or maybe
Precisely because of this
My heart refuses to freeze shut.
It remains open.
Yes.
I close my frozen eyelashes, open my snowy heart
And take it all in.
