I’m Fine/Save Me: A Tattooed Message About Depression Gone Viral.

i'm fine/ save me tattoo

This tattoo, since posted on Facebook exactly one week ago, has received almost 400,000 likes.

Bekah Miles, of Oregon, US, got a tattoo which from the front appears to say “I’m fine” but when viewed from above reads “Save me.”

The reason?

‘”I’m ready to have a conversation about my mental illness. Last year, I was diagnosed with depression.’

‘In all honesty, I believe it was a problem for quite a while before that, but I think it just got worse to the point of hardly functioning.’

‘To me, it means that others see this person that seems okay, but, in reality, is not okay at all.’

‘It reminds me that people who may appear happy, may be at battle with themselves.’

She also explained how she wanted the tattoo to be a ‘conversation starter’ with people about depression.

She wrote: ‘Mental illness is serious, but so shamed in our society. We care so much for our physical health, but hardly a thing about our mental state and that is seriously messed up.'”  (from the Daily Mail, see here for more)

In a similar inking for awareness act, the Semi-Colon project also raises awareness for depression.

Bekah has bravely come out with her depression to her parents and others through a public forum where others who suffer from depression can find solace and an openness towards discussion.

Too often, we close our eyes to the fact that when depression hits, it far more than a feeling of sadness that will pass on it’s own with time.

Please watch the powerful video linked below and share to help those suffering from depression.

Mental illness carries a stigma that often creates barriers for those suffering from it. It’s one thing to say I’m feeling blue and another to admit to a debilitating mental illness.

Bekah’s permanent statement on her skin is a somber reminder of all those who did not have the courage to ask help with their pain. The discussion is open, let’s talk.
