Arriving in NYC last week, I was in a cab, and I couldn’t figure how to swipe my credit card. I did it the right way, but it didn’t swipe. I did it the wrong way, figuring the right way had been wrong. That didn’t work. I did it two other ways. Then I did it the right way 20 more times. Finally, the cabby offered to drive me to an ATM. I thanked him, meanwhile swiping one last time out of casual desperation. Ding! It worked.
