In one of my online yoga classes, the instructor sometimes gives background info on things like “seed sounds”. From what I understand, chanting particular syllables evokes certain feelings in the body and manifest intentions through their vibration. “Om” is the seed sound for all of creation, and I enjoy hearing and feeling it humming through me.
Another place I sometimes do yoga is at the preschool. It is a much different scene there. Most of the three and four-year-old kids are happy to try out the different body positions. They especially enjoy the poses named for animals. It is a bit noisier and rowdier with all the giggling and smiling.
A favorite pose in both places of practice is “cat-cow”. This one is done on hands and knees on the mat. For the cow part, you stretch heart forward, head upward, belly down, and hips up. Cat pose takes the back in the opposite direction as the navel draws in toward the arched spine with head and hips dropped down. Going back and forth between the two poses really loosens things up nicely.
During my solitary online practice, this is all done in silence or with further cues from the instructor. At preschool, “cat-cow” is accompanied by sounds of “moo” and “meow”. Loud, silly ones. You couldn’t help yourself but to join in.
Today I was wondering what we might be accidentally manifesting with all the mooing. Could that be a seed sound for something?
And then I realized moo is om spelled in reverse. (Almost.)
I can’t imagine anything bad coming from this version of the practice, since it is done with such joy and the very best of intentions. I would hate to be unpleasantly surprised, though. If someone does have a glossary of things like this and can look it up for me, I’d appreciate it. I do my best to cause no harm.
Please look up “meow”, too, if you get a chance. (Just to be sure.)
