As a child, magic used to come so easily to me. I would see magic in the people around me; in the sounds of the birds in the trees every morning, in my mother’s eyes or my father’s smile.

But then, at some point, I lost it.

I was too busy searching for the next best thing to see the magic right in front of me. Every moment was (and often still is) a distraction. Society was telling me that what I had was never enough and, soon enough, I stopped seeing magic.

Do you ever feel that way? Like every moment is part of a journey to something else, a constant path of improvement to something better that lurks just beyond the horizon?

If so, here are some ways we can find that special magic in our lives again, that allow us to reach those sparkling moments hidden throughout our days.

To find magic:

We can forget the friends who only care about the bright, shiny things; the ones who don’t see subtle shades of grey, or see the light of our deep, shimmering hearts.

We can look at the lonely moon on a deep, dark night and let it be our guiding light. And know that we are more than this hour or this day, and the sum of our being equals more than our clothes or our bodies, more than one wrong glance, one wrong word or one terrible, terrible day. There is a huge, fantastic future ahead of all of us. We just need to seek it.

We can wake up early when the smell of the new, green morning is the strongest, knowing that this is our life, this is our body and our heart, and no one can take that away from us.

If we don’t know what we want, we can find out what we don’t We can ask questions ceaselessly and always be inquisitive. We should keep questioning this thing called life and not settle for anything less than the best.

We can believe. Believe in ourselves. Believe in our faith. Believe in our friends. We can trust to life. Trust to love and trust in the process of love and the time it might take for it to bloom. We can try to relinquish control, because that might our time to truly shine.

We can cry. When did being emotional become uncool? We should cry in the movies. We should cry when our dog gets sick. We should cry when our friends do shitty things. We should cry in the middle of the night at all the meaningless pain and suffering in the world. We should cry because people die and the whole world is cruel and life is cruel and in the dark, we feel like nothing but a blip on some large and lonely plane of existence. We should stop thinking that we’re not allowed to feel. We are.

So many of us are just waiting. Waiting for the big things and not appreciating the little things. Life is the glowing sunset sparkling on glassy water. It is a warm cup of tea that feels like a hug on an icy cold morning. It is the tender love of a mother gazing at her baby and him gazing back at her with a wondrous love in his smile, discovering a new universe in the depth of her sparkling eyes.

We might not do our best this time, or even the time after that. But if we keep trying, each time, we’ll get a little closer to our best and soon enough, we will remember to just live.

Sometimes magic is disguised as hard work, and showing up, and not giving up. Magic doesn’t always come all the way to us. We have to meet it halfway, hold its hand, and show it the way to our hearts. The universe will throw many good things our way. But we have to recognise those things for what they are, when they show up.

Consider this: when we were young, magic was everywhere. It has not gone. The universe hasn’t changed. We have. The magic is still there. We just need to find it. We need to slow down and look. We need to spend time with our families, and ask our friends the questions that matter, or stroke our lover’s hair in the quiet, sleepy pre-dawn. We need to tell the truth, always. Anything else is a waste of the time that slowly ticks away, counting down our existence on this fascinating, lovely, lonely planet.

Most of all, we need to ask ourselves why we ever needed to find magic when it is already all around us.
