Short-sightedness or nearsightedness, in medical terms – Myopia is a vision problem where the distant objects appear blurry. The eyeballs grows long causing difficult to focus on distant objects. This problem is usually witnessed during childhood. As the age increases, even the eye grows and so does this vision problem. It becomes really crucial to protect your child’s eye. Myopia is mostly caused due to family history or lifestyle. Family history is something we can’t change but we can certainly work on the lifestyle. Changing the way of living can have a good impact on your child’s vision condition.

You can manage myopia by:

Keeping the digital devices away:

Whether it’s for work or entertainment, digital devices are high in usage. A study reveals that myopia has increased due to the increasing use of digital devices. A kid almost spends 3 hours a day with digital devices which means he / she performs much of near activities which can affect the visual power. It’s not possible to keep the younger generation away from the digital devices but you can try to reduce the usage by keeping them active performing outdoor activities. Digital eyestrain is also alarmingly increasing, however this can be smartly prevented by the use of computer glasses.

Healthy nutrition is necessary:

Like healthy food is important for body, healthy food is also important for eye health. It is a proven fact that poor diet increases the risk of myopia. For healthy eyes, intake of proper nutrition is really essential for children.

Engage the kids in outdoor activities:

All work and no play can cause myopia (twist in the proverb). Yes play is as important as studies not only for Jack but for every kid. Research suggests the risk of Myopia is less in kids who are engaged in outdoor activities. Children who play outside get used to distant-vision activities, due to which they are able to focus well at distance. Also sun contains Vitamin D which is good for healthy eye growth.

The researcher in Australia evaluated that children who performed near work and spent less time in outdoor activities had the highest mean amount of myopia.
Researchers in UK evaluated that there was 2 percent drop in risk of Myopia development in children who spent one extra hour outdoor per week.

So to reduce the risk, let the kids spend more time under the sun.

Manage the condition of Myopia:

Normal prescription glasses or contact lenses can correct the distant viewing vision condition but it does not assure to reduce the progression of myopia. Due to progression, the prescription keeps on changing. So regular eye examination is a must. For significant reduction of myopia, multifocal glasses and multifocal contacts are best choices. Multifocals can slow down the progression of nearsightedness in children and works as an effective treatment.

As said before, myopia progresses with the growing age, it becomes important to control it in children. Take help of glasses to reduce or control this vision condition. Don’t take myopia lightly, apart from nearsightedness, it may also lead to major eye health problems, later.
