Left or right, it shouldn’t matter. It comes down to human decency. The United States is known as a melting pot historically because we have welcomed, ‘the tired, the poor, the huddled masses…’ There must be a better way. Families being force-ably separated at our border would leave our forefathers turning over in their graves. We are the land of the free and the brave. There is nothing braver than leaving your homeland, everything you know and taking that leap of faith, for a better life, a better future for your children. Change is not easy but these people are desperate to offer their children a better tomorrow.
It is indescribable what is happening at our borders right now. There is not a political agenda to be won against the masses. Imagine, as a parent, that your own lifeblood and will to live is wrenched from your arms. Conversely, as a small child, you are taken from your parents’ protective arms and introduced to a ‘tent city.’ Just because they brought you to this country. It was not your choice, and your parents may not have known what was to confront them at the end of this path to the promised land. Many of these people have not had the luxury of the educational system that we have been privileged to. I did not believe this could be happening, until I began researching it. It is estimated that 250 children per week are being seized. What is being gained by all of this? Nothing. Everyone loses.
As the greatest country in the world, there must be a better solution. Democrat/Republican, above everything else, we are human. The very core of our being is establishing a family unit. That should be the last thing torn apart by the elected government, whether there is a law or not. The conditions the children are being kept in, is something that I cannot let my mind recreate. A 5-star hotel could not accommodate the sheer terror they are feeling being forcibly taken from their parents– heartbreakingly I imagine the conditions are much worse. It is inconceivable (do you mean inconceivable) the logic that was put in place for this to transpire.
A law is a law, yes, but collecting children at our borders is not teaching anyone a lesson. It is not bettering any cause, it is breaking apart families and the very fundamentals the country was built on. Politics aside, human rights and decency should triumph. The outcry from the public quickly resulted in an executive order being signed. Exemplifying that small actions can result in change. “Some believe that is it only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I’ve found. I found that it is the small things. Every day deeds by ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay” (Lord of the Rings, Tolkien). This quote is applicable to small things, like holding the door for a stranger, saying please or thank or, small deeds. It also extends to larger deeds, calling a congressmember with concern for a law, donating time or goods to a local food drive or standing up for something you firmly believe in. Now is the time to make those small deeds count.
