Most people think that pain or discomfort is the driving force to go see a doctor. Whether it’s a chiropractor, an M.D., an acupuncturist, or whatever, I’m here to tell you pain is not what makes someone see a doctor.
It is how that pain is affecting the quality of their life, and the quality of their loved ones lives. It’s not okay to have a problem that prevents you from doing, either totally or partially, what you’d like to be able to do.
Several months ago I had a 49-year-old patient come in with low back pain. She’d had it off and on for over 20 years. Up to this point it was no big deal. It would hurt, she’d take Advil, a hot shower and rest, and she’d feel better in a few days. When that stopped working, she would get stronger drugs from her M.D. which took the pain away eventually.
She thought that since her mom had back pain, her dad had back pain, her older sister had back pain, it was hereditary and she’d have to just live with it. She was fine with that and was able to get through life okay. That is until her life changed, as she described it, in one of the greatest ways possible.
She had a grandson. Taking care of her grandson was one of the most exciting and joyous things she’d been able to do in a long time. As her grandchild got bigger, she couldn’t hold him for very long. She couldn’t pick him up from the floor or out of the crib. Suddenly, she had a reason to do something different about how she was handling her chronic, nagging back pain that she had learned to live with.
The good news was that I could help her. The bad news was, because she had done nothing to heal previously, other than masking the symptoms with medications, it was going to take some time and a lot of work to correct the problem.
After a complete evaluation, I found she had nerves that were not functioning correctly and a spine that was not moving the way it was supposed to, leading to spinal decay.
I’m happy to report that she is now able to fully enjoy being a grandmother by holding her grandson, getting on the floor to play with him and even able to put him in and out of his car seat with no discomfort.
The best part is, with the proper motion of her spine, the accelerated, premature decaying process has dramatically slowed. This will allow her to enjoy her future as a grandmother.
Helping people do what they love longer, harder, faster, stronger is what chiropractors do. It’s not just about pain relief; it’s about quality of life.
