Formal mentorship programs, including those that utilize life coaches, can demonstrably increase your success. L
According to a study conducted found that there are many different motivations for seeking a formal mentorship but there are also concrete ways to measure the success of the relationship, no matter the impetus for starting it.
While it is proven that mentorship and coaching relationships can have a “life-changing” effect, there is little known about why. Yes, the relationships do work, and they can alter the client’s behaviors in a significant manner, but there is still some cloudiness about how these changes occur.
Practical Applications for Life and Career Coaches
Rather than go down a theoretical rabbit hole trying to figure out the why, let’s take a closer look at the many benefits of working with a life coach. Clients often report that they “know what to do and how to do it” but when it comes down to actually taking the necessary steps for their success they feel stuck. In fact, many people compare their life coaches to their personal trainers.
While the stated goals and outcomes are much different, there are some similarities in the process. Just as trainers increase motivation levels and create a relationship that helps to keep the client more active, the well-trained life coach can serve as the spark that helps the client undertake the tasks necessary for their continued success.
A Greater Tool Kit
Life coaching isn’t magic, yet another great asset of working with a life coach is their ability to increase the client’s toolkit. While in the beginning stages of career advancement it may be true that the client just needs to do what needs to be done. As they progress along and increase their success, that statement may not hold true. Initially, some roadblocks and obstacles may be of the client’s own making or inertia, but as time goes on and more progress is made, they will likely reach the stage where they do not know what it is that needs to be done.
In such instances, the coach can provide the insight and skills that are required to make it to the next level of success. Corporate environments are such that new and varied skills must be constantly be developed in order to remain relevant to the firm and of greatest service to customers. Many people approach coaches when they feel that they have “topped out” and have achieved all they can with their current skill set.
Such a feeling makes them prime candidates for successful mentorship programs and life coaching relationships. When a client believes that they have reached the apex of where their skills can take them, they will be much more open to a coaching relationship. It can be a foreign idea for high performers to seek help or admit that they do not have all of the answers and need a different approach to problems.
Taking It To the Next Level
Many of the most effective mentor or coach relationships occur when the client and the coach are able to determine the exact outcomes that the mentee seeks. When there is a clear map in place for the desired results, both sides are able to contribute in a much more meaningful manner.
Rather than coming to a coach and saying that they want a promotion, a successful mentee will list the skills that they need to develop in order to attain said promotion.
Specificity is key in a successful life coaching relationship, and the more concrete and defined that the goals are, the more meaningful the process will be. Corporate success, or success in one’s personal relationships, is possible when the client and coach are able to identify the areas in need of improvement and development together.
Through multiple sessions that focus on the success that the client desires, along with the skills that they lack, a clear path to success can be established.
Maximizing performance can be an outcome that yields exciting results for both the mentor and the mentee and allows for improvement and success on an ongoing basis. Once the pair has established a good rapport and style of effective communication, the possibilities can be endless.
