“Honored doesn’t quite grasp the thrill and mania associated with being a finalist in such a prestigious national contest. It feels like just yesterday I was a struggling single mother brewing late at night and wishing for a better life standing over my steaming homemade chai. Thankfully, a magical network of colleagues and friends encouraged me to take the leap of faith and have been supporting and inspiring me to manifest my dreams of being an entrepreneur ever since.” ~ Brook Eddy
Brook Eddy, a finalist in Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Entrepreneur Of The Year” contest shares about her company’s impact on the industry and community in this great highlight reel.
Brook traveled to India in 2002 to study a social justice movement based on Bhakti (or devotion through social action). Along the way, she fell in love with the aroma and flavor of the spicy masala chai ubiquitous to northern India. Upon her return to the U.S., Brook was unable to find the spicy fresh chai that she had enjoyed during her travels so she began brewing her own at home. Standing over the pot of steaming chai on her stove and inhaling the layers of fragrant spices, Brook was suddenly swept back into the chaos, colors and vibrancy of India.
When her homemade brew gained attention (and even addiction) from friends and neighbors, she decided to take the principles of Bhakti that she had learned in India and build a company on this ideal. This single mother of twins took a deep breath, quit her full time job, and dove into the process of bringing consumers a craft brewed chai that was steeped in social and environmental change. This vision continues to be infused in their spicy brew: Bhakti Chai is a certified B Corporation, uses fair trade, organic, and non-GMO ingredients, and their championing of female empowerment through charitable contributions and scholarships.
