Are you planning to remodel your kitchen? If so, the first thing you need to consider is your kitchen’s layout. It’s one of the most important design elements as it will determine how you’ll cook, eat and socialize. Also, the aesthetic appeal and functionality of your kitchen depends on the arrangement of this space.
In this blog post, we have elaborated on the different types of layouts to help inspire your next kitchen remodelling project.
One-Wall Kitchen
A one-wall layout features a kitchen that’s built into one linear wall. Originally known as the ‘Pullman kitchen’, this space-saving layout is usually found in small homes and studio apartments because it conserves floor space and construction costs. Visually, all countertops, cabinets and appliances are on one wall, with one workstation to perform tasks. In this design, everything is easily accessible but unfortunately, there is not much room for storage. So, if you want to maximize the limited kitchen space you have, go for a one-wall layout.
Galley Kitchen
The galley, or corridor kitchen, is the most efficient layout if you have a narrow kitchen space. Ideal for small, one-bedroom apartments, this arrangement features two parallel walls with worktops and units organized in a thin walkway in the middle. Also known as a walkthrough kitchen, the design makes use of every square inch of space and allows you to divide the kitchen into different work sites. However, if there is more than one person working or cooking, then the kitchen can become a little cramped. In addition, there is limited storage space and no dining area.
Kitchen Island
If you want more counter space in your kitchen, then choose an island layout. This design gives additional space work, storage and seating. Island kitchens are usually rectangular and can be used in several ways. You can add a sink or a beverage cooler to the island and place some light-weight stools around. To create a diversified kitchen, an island layout is a perfect choice.
U-Shape Kitchen
A U-shaped or horseshoe layout features cabinets on three sides that offers more room for storing your utensils and easily accessing your cooking equipment. In other words, the kitchen has two perpendicular walls with an island along the back wall to form a U-shape. This is an ideal layout to create a practical and usable kitchen that allows smooth workflow. The best part of this design is that you have much more storage space but the downside is you can’t accommodate a table and chairs.
L-Shape Kitchen
An L-shaped design is a smart option for small to medium sized kitchens. It focuses on maximizing corner space by including countertops on two adjoining walls that are perpendicular to form an ‘L’. This design offers optimum counter space and can accommodate a dining area as well. You can extend the design depending on the extra space you have. It’s an ideal solution for open plan kitchens or living rooms. If you’re looking to create a kitchen to enjoy quality time with your family or entertain guests while cooking, then an L-shaped kitchen is your best bet.
