Sam Harris is a best-selling author who has made a name for himself writing about the necessity of moving beyond religious belief in a post 911 world. What many don’t know about him is that he is a serious long term meditator. After publishing two books that made him one of the most prominent voices for the “new atheism,” his latest book, The Moral Landscape is about how neuroscience and philosophy can converge in an exploration of what ethics, morality and values are really all about.
My hunch is that his next book will be about my favorite subject – spirituality without the overblown baggage of outdated beliefs that no longer do us any good.
Harris recently began an active blog in which he has made several entries introducing non-religious people to the value of vipassana meditation.
In the fascinating and lucid video below he answers questions from an online Reddit forum and goes into some detail regarding a vision of contemporary spirituality rooted in meditation practice and reason – and of course without all the other bullshit.
