I usually make adventure travel videos, whooping and hollering like a happy fool around the world.
But there was one time when I made a video love letter. It’s like nothing I’d ever done before or have done since.
In 2011 I was riding my bike across the country with my good buddy Nick (co-adventurer in Discovery’s ‘Out of the Wild Venezuela). Well, fate intervened in Arizona and for 200 miles I got off my bike, rented a U-haul and raced across the state to catch up with and surprise my dream girl.I had previously blew it with this violin toting rock-star and this was my desperate attempt at winning her back, or at least showing her that I really cared.
Although not one of my typical adventures, it was certainly more adrenaline pumping than anything I’d ever tackled before. Girls are freaking scary!
We got back together for a short time, but In the end, things didn’t turn out as I had dreamed for us. We went our separate ways at a teary goodbye in London Heathrow Airport, and after a year of no communication, I’m happy to say that we’re friends again…just friends. It’s something I never thought I could handle after an extremely broken heart and it makes me incredibly happy.
I’ll be forever grateful to this beautiful woman for teaching me a lot about life and love, and I’ll continue cheering her on from afar as one of her biggest fans.
I look back at this video and half of me cringes, but the other half (actually more than half) is very proud that I followed my heart, it’s the only way I know how to live.
