“The spiritual path—is simply the journey of living our lives. Everyone is on a spiritual path; most people just don’t know it.” ~ Marianne Williamson Quotes
I had never quite understood what was happening to me. I had always felt as if I was ‘not of this earth.’ In an odd way, at times, I had even felt ‘adopted.’ In time, I grew accustomed to feeling this way. I hadn’t realized that all of these unusual experiences and events—was part of my own spiritual awakening.
It wasn’t until I was a teenager that my Mom finally shared with me her own experiences with “spirits.” I was only 5 years old, when I had my first experience of ‘hearing’ a spirit—I remember hearing my name being called, and then the sound of a door closing in the staircase of our apartment building in which we lived.
It frightened me more than words can say. I just didn’t understand it.
My next experience occurred shortly after my parents separated in 1988. My Mom, sister, and I moved to a basement apartment in Mississauga, Ontario where we lived for many years. It was my home. My sister and I shared a room–and bunk beds. On one particular occasion, I can remember feeling something ‘touch’ my feet—and pulling on my blankets. But when I shot upright, there was nothing there. My sister was already out of the room by then, and with my Mom. Quite often, I would pull together my pillow and blankets, and go to sleep on my Mom’s bedroom floor.
This became my routine. I was too afraid, and too unaware to understand what was happening to me. I didn’t realize that this was part of my awakening.
And then, one night I woke up to what appeared to be an older woman walking out of my closet door. I sat up suddenly, and shocked with disbelief. I threw those covers over my head and closed my eyes as tight as I could.
In the morning, I overheard my Mom saying that, “her grandmother came to visit her last night” and that she had a ‘message.’ The message had to do with my Mom’s Dad, my Grandfather. That’s when I knew, and as soon as my Mom got off the phone I proceeded to share with her my experience, too.
It was one of those rare moments that helped to bring me to a better place of understanding and self-acceptance. We all experience awakenings, each in our own way. We need to be open to these events as they occur, so that we may gain a better understanding of who we are and what gifts we may share.
