Prayer of the single mother
Another day of wallowing,
Of waking up in tears,
She drives to work by following
The traces of her fears.
Another day of in-between
The worry and the haste,
She travels in a submarine
Beneath a sea of waste.
Another day of compromise,
Of duty hard to bear,
She bears the seeds of paradise
Within her own despair.
When daylight fades inside her nest
To end another day
She holds her children to her chest
And sings the pain away.
Her heart cracks open with a sigh
As she begins to pray,
A single mother’s lullaby
To bless another day.
