When Love is Not Enough. {Poem}

courtesy of author, Alexa Torontow

I sip my morning coffee
From the kitchen table
I feel your gaze and look over to see you in the next room

The morning light peaks through the curtains
Framing your broad shoulders
Crooked smile
And those eyes
Those deep blue and green eyes

You sit on the edge of my bed
Leaning over to lace up your shoes
For the very last time

You and I both know
This is goodbye

There are just those events in life
That leave nothing the same
Unable to go back to the way things were
The way we both wish they could be

Our goodbye is wonderfully and painfully long
The minutes turn into hours
The nights turn into days

Seventy-two hours later
After many tears and angry words
Even a few sleep-deprived laughs

We say goodbye

I’m sorry
I’m sorry
I love you
You say

I hate that I still love you
I reply

I finish my morning coffee
As I watch you get in your car
And drive away

I sit here
In love
But with my new understanding
That love alone
Is not enough.
