Don’t worry
We don’t need the oceans
Besides
What use do they really serve?
All of those scary sharks and stinging jellyfish
Riptides and sucking waves
We have progressed
Evolved
Invented
Ourselves away from the oceans
We now can navigate the world from the air
In metal cylinders that are the large, un-feathered birds of the sky
That drop us anywhere we desire to be
On top of mountains, in the center of deserts, or into cities
Soon even the moon
No longer are we reliant upon travel in wooden ships across the seven seas
We have progressed
Evolved
Invented
Ways to create waves in concrete-encased pools
So that we can surf without having to get our hair salty wet and sand in our rash vests
We have progressed
Evolved
Invented
A way to grow fish in black-plastic ponds
In places where the waves don’t caress the earth and no salt hangs in the air
Which is actually a blessing, as we like fish without a side serving of micro-plastics
The ocean
That body of water
The depths of which we can never see
Extending far beyond our reach
No matter how long we hold our breath
Filled with all manners of creatures that have inspired both myths and nightmares
Currents
The highways of the ocean that swirl underneath
No longer only carrying creatures but also the remnants of our human greed
Bright coloured jewels that we have discarded
Are turning this blue world
Technicolor
As plastic clogs up the highways
Whales, turtles, fish, and seagulls wash up onto shore
Stomach contents
Full of transparent bags like jellyfish
Small hot-pink pieces smelling of krill
Plastic that is discarded with no care
Is filling up our oceans
Predictions
Much more than myth
By 2050 more plastic than fish will be in the ocean
We have progressed
Evolved
Invented
Ways to trash our oceans
But don’t worry
We don’t need the oceans anyway
