I love everything about autumn.
It is by far my favorite time of year. Already, there’s a bite in the air—at least in the mornings—and I can see a tint of color edging the leaves as they prepare to turn.
There’s so much to look forward to this season, and sometimes I enjoy watching movies that put me in that autumn mood. A year ago, I brought you “13 Atmospheric Films for Fall.” The emphasis was on the spooky and creepy and spine-tingling films to take us into autumn and the Halloween season.
This year, I offer you 13 more films for fall that will make you laugh, cry, and might even inspire you:
1. “When Harry Met Sally“
This is one of my all-time favorite films. It’s a story about friendship and love, and while the story takes place over a period of years and a variety of seasons, this is a great film for fall. It’s about how things change, and it makes the top of my list.
2. “Harry Potter and…”
Any Harry Potter movie will put us in the mood for fall! These are great to marathon as autumn sets in, because each movie starts with a new school year.
3. “Practical Magic”
A list of fall films wouldn’t be complete without a couple of great Halloween options, and this film about witches starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock is simply too good to miss!
4. “Hocus Pocus”
For another fun Halloween film, “Hocus Pocus” is a story about witches that should make the list for mandatory fall viewing.
Think fall and football, and you’ve got “Silver Linings Playbook.” This quirky comedy stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, and it will definitely get us in the mood for the season.
6. “Remember the Titans”
This is one of my other football/fall movie picks. It’s an inspirational story, and it’s particularly apt right now in light of racial tension across the country. Watch this to remember that black lives matter, and enjoy a charming tale of how a football team was able to bridge the racial divide to become a united front. Plus, it’s based on a true story!
7. “Rudy”
This is another football fall pick. This one will inspire us, too, as it tells the tale of an unlikely football hero and his struggle to follow his dreams. A little grit sure does go a long way!
8. “The Blind Side”
This is another great football movie, and it also addresses race relations. Be inspired by this true story of a mother and her adopted son.
9. “Mona Lisa Smile”
This tale of a girls’ college and the teacher who shook it up is a great add to our fall viewing list.
10. “Dead Poets Society”
This is another tale of students and teachers and living one’s life to the fullest. Be inspired by Robin Williams in this wonderful film.
11. “Flatliners”
Definitely watch this now because the sequel is out in theaters. This is a great film for fall about a medical college and a group of doctors who experiment with life and death. The original cast features Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt.
12. “You’ve Got Mail“
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan bring us a sweet love story set in autumn in New York. This charming film is a remake of the classic film “The Shop Around the Corner.” It’s set in fall and is all about falling in love!
13. “Autumn in New York”
We can’t talk about autumn and movies without a mention for “Autumn in New York.” No spoilers here, but this viewing will require tissues.
As the season sets in, this list should help us get in the mood for leaves crunching underfoot, a crisp chill in the air, the blustering autumn breeze, hayrides, bonfires, corn mazes, trees laden with apples, and everything that says “fall” to us.
Check out the first list if Halloween and all that’s spooky is more your thing. Now grab some popcorn, and enjoy the show!
