Love Song for the Desert
I went to the desert to find myself
and instead
I found a cactus
and dunes of rolling sand
I found dying flowers
weeds
palm trees
I found crisp, dry air
bright, harsh sunlight
heat
I found what it truly means
to be arid
and barren beyond drought
and I found
that my heart is not like that
not like I thought
my heart is the coalescence of vibrant color
stretched across the sunset lit sky
it’s the deep blue mountain peaks
set against the desert sand
and ocean waves crashing in the background
as much as I hate to admit it,
my heart is not where things die
