This morning, I woke up to the news that Mary Oliver had passed away.
Like many others, Mary’s writings have been, and will remain, of significant influence in my life. The simplicity yet ethereal sophistication of her poems speaks to my soul in a way not many others have—and for this, I’m eternally grateful.
It probably wasn’t Mary’s initial intention to save anyone’s life, she was simply sharing the way she saw the world and the messages she heard back. In her own words:
“There’s Oliver, still standing around in the weeds. There she is, still scribbling in her notebook.” ~ from her book, Long Life: Essays and Other Writings
But in doing this, she did save many and inspired others to do the same—me included. Now, I believe if you can do what you enjoy and in doing so extend that joy to others, then you are onto a good thing.
So thank you Mary—live on.

What is it that you plan to do with your one precious life?
Do you plan to spend it in fear to trade in
the pain
Always looking for yourself
The world has hurt us all in some way
When all of a sudden you hear this minute
This minute
Don’t pretend like you don’t have
Bigger dreams
What will your plan of attack be
This time
Maybe your heart is your sword and
Maybe your heart at the same time is
All you need.
