Today’s society is one that is increasingly based on consumption. From what we eat to the type of clothes that we wear, many people base a lot of their self-worth upon material possessions. This might not seem like a big deal if you can afford the price tag, but what happens if you hit a rough patch? It’s not healthy to base your happiness off of your possessions as a consumer. Instead, you should focus on finding sustainable joy in your daily life with what you have now. Here are some tips to help you be content with what you already have.
1. Be mindful
One of the first steps to take when attempting to place more value on what you have rather than what you want is to take the time to truly understand what you have. This doesn’t mean only thinking about material possessions. Spend some time thinking about where you are in life and how you’ve reached this place. Did you fight your way through school or a busy corporate ladder? Did you spend time with loved ones who gave you support and enabled you to succeed?
Take an honest look at your life without being critical and be grateful for your achievements, for your loved ones, and for the strength that has brought you this far. Find joy in these things and stop dwelling on things that you want in the future so much. Time passes quickly and you’ll arrive at those goals soon enough.
2. Deep clean your house
If you’re really hoping to find contentment in the things you already have instead of worrying about the things you’d like to buy, give your home a deep clean. Go through each and every item in your home and make sure that it’s clean and organized. As you move through this process, acknowledge how much you have and how well your needs are met with these possessions.
Do you have a genuine need that must be fulfilled by something you don’t yet have on hand or do you already have plenty of items to keep yourself occupied? For most of us, the answer is the latter. It can be easy to put on blinders when it comes to our current possessions, especially if they’re things we’re around every day. Taking the time to clean and organize them will remind you of the many things you already own.
3. Repair, don’t replace
It can be tempting to simply replace something that breaks. Why bother fixing something when you can just buy a new one? The truth, however, is that there is often a lot of life left in items that need repair—they just need a little help to get back on their feet. According to House Method, instead of jumping at the chance to replace a faulty appliance with the latest and greatest, consider having it repaired instead.
Remember: Content comes from within, so take a few deep breaths and try out these tips to see if you can become a bit happier with what you already have.
