Wooden idols are traditionally made in India by the craftsmen and artists since years. It is believed that the earliest wooden idol that was prepared in India was of Mahavir. It was a sandalwood sculpture.
The most prominent in this art is carving structures of Deities. Hindu God and Goddess statues, sculptures, idols and Big murtis are considered holy after completion. These are sculpted since ancient times.
Amongst the holy structures, Goddess statues are always considered important as Goddess in Hindus are highly worshipped. In India Goddess is placed to a top position in our imagination. It relates to our mothers. Goddess are worshipped more because devotees feel that they are our mothers. They are always there to protect her devotees like a mother does. She cares, gives strength, nurtures and shower blessings. In Hinduism, there are so many Goddess people faith on. Its aspect is there is one mother Goddess who creates several other Goddess, and that is Shakti.
Goddess Durga has numerous creations of her. Here are just some of them.
Sati
Lord Shiva was married to Sati. When she died, it was hard to control Shiva and he was inconsolable till Sati came in the form of Parvati. It is said that Sati lacked few traits which was fulfilled in her incarnation as Parvati. She is said to be the mother of the world.
Parvati
Parvati was the daughter of Himalayan Kind and mother of Kartikeya and Ganesha. She is believed to be creator of the world.
Durga
Durga is mostly worshipped in Bengal. Her statues are the most beautiful one. Detailed features of Goddess Durga statues always attract the devotees.
Kali
When Goddess is angry, she becomes Kali. Her statue is displayed in black colour, angry face and with a skull garland.
Saraswati
Idols of Saraswati are extremely beautiful as she is portrayed with a musical instrument in the sculptures. She indicates learning, knowledge.
Lakshmi
Goggess Lakshmi denotes wealth. Her statue is loved by devotees as she is the most worshipped Goddess at the time of Diwali every year.
Sita
Wife of Lord Ram Goddess Sita is considered as a mother. She is an incarnation of Lakshmi. She symbolizes sacrifice, devotion, purity, motherhood , loyalty, honesty, patience and duty towards husband. Lord Ram is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Radha
Radha is the lady of love. She is a Goddess who is worshipped as a symbol of Love. Love without expectations and with purity. She is said to be a woman who fell in Love with Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Bhuvaneshwari
Bhuvneshwari is Earth Goddess.
