The Last Zero Day

We all run into tough times. Things just aren’t going the way we want it to. Life is either moving too slow and you’re unhappy and bored, or it’s moving too fast and you can barely hold on.

I don’t really need to go on about this, most people know what i’m talking about, some are even going through it right now.

We get stuck in a rut and and it seems like theres no way out. But there is a way out and theres even a way to prevent falling in the rut in the first place. I’m talking about having no more zero days.

What is a zero day? A zero day is a day where you don’t do a single thing to push you anywhere closer to your goal.

What does that mean?

Well I’ll start off with what it doesn’t mean. It does not mean you have to run a mile every day if your goal is getting fit. It does not mean you have to study 4 hours a day for school and write an essay every day.

That’s not the point of a non-zero day. The point is that you have to make yourself, promise yourself, that the new life you live, is a non-zero one.

Sunday night and all you did was sit in bed and watch Netflix? Get on the ground and do one sit up. Open up your notepad and write a single sentence. Clean the clutter on your desk. Meditate. Do one thing. Because one is infinitely more than zero.

When you’re in a bad place, it’s usually your habits and behaviour that keeps you there. You want to work towards your dreams, but that doesn’t happen in a bad place. It happens after days and days and weeks and weeks of consistent non zero days.

Non zero days support you like a lifeline. In this case, the lifeline is a thread. But nonetheless it is a lifeline. It keeps you a thread away from being sucked into the abyss or washed away in the current. As long as you keep the non zero days, you won’t lose your footing no matter how hard life slams down on you.

Non zero days encourage you to do more. Let’s say you want to make today a non zero day by doing a pushup. So you get on the ground, and do a pushup. Well, you’re already down there and you just did a push up, why not try for two. Not many people are going to do just one push up.

Do your yoga poses for ten seconds. Let’s be honest, you’re not gonna stop at ten seconds. You’re already there, you might as well go through with the whole routine. Or you can non zero your day by writing in your journal. I bet that after the first sentence, you’re probably going to go for another. And another. And suddenly you WANT to keep journaling. It’s the magic of getting started, and that’s what non zeros will do for you.

Pro tip – one of the more easy ways to make your day non zero is journaling or writing. If you haven’t done it before try using some sort of habit journal or something with a streak mechanism. They are easy to use and get you going fast if you are new to writing.

The bottom line is, the end of the zero day means you will always keep moving forward. It means there will never be a rest day again for the rest of your life. And that’s okay because you are stronger than rest days. You are stronger than sitting on the couch for 12 hours .You are too strong and too young to do zero things any more. Make yesterday the last zero day of the rest of your life.
