Every person on the face of this capitalist planet is faced with the question, “what should I do for a living”. Some people find their meaning or purpose through their means of making money, some people just try and get by while having passion projects on the side. The trick is finding what works best for you. That could be working a job on the side while working toward a dream you’ve always had, or finding a paid internship at a company that you appreciate.
Chances are if you’re an adult and reading this article then you have some means of making money, paying the bills, and getting by. Coming from a house of 6 kids with a single mother, “getting by” can be all some people are capable of. But, in an ideal world, we should all be able to do the things we feel we are meant to do and “get by”. There are enough people in the world working jobs they don’t like, not getting paid enough, that sit in the misery. Explore yourself and make changes for your happiness.
So, there are ways of making money, and there are ways of making our lives fulfilled and purposeful. Finding what you should do for a living should a balance of these two ideas. I once heard someone say that everyone should have 3 hobbies- one that makes money, one that provides meaning and passion, and one to keep physically active and healthy. This is the best advice because every aspect of life would be fulfilled under this lifestyle.
The idea we should find a “living” and a way to make as much money as possible is an idea encouraged by capitalism. The true way to find happiness is to disregard the urge to be rich. Although finding a living is centered around money, is fulfillment and enrichment is what you are really looking for, base your living on what is good for you (your physical and emotional wellbeing) and what is good for the world.
