Hosting houseguests is easier said than done as a lot of planning and patience goes into welcoming friends and family into your home. There’s much more to be done than simply tidying up the guest room. Not only do you want to offer a clean environment for your guests, but you also want to give off the impression that you do in fact have your life together.
But not all people prepare for houseguests the same way. A recent survey by Joybird revealed exact habits and opinions of hosts before their guests arrive. If you’ve ever wondered if your hosting routine is normal, look no further.
The Majority of People Deep Clean
Across the board, hosts feel the need to clean their house from top to bottom before their guest’s arrival. Even though the people staying probably wouldn’t notice if the living room has been recently mopped, over half of people hold themselves to this high standard. Less than 1% of people say they don’t clean at all before a guest comes.
This includes everything from dusting to changing the bedsheets. Cleaning for houseguests can feel like so much pressure that you almost need a checklist in order to stay on top of all the things you need to get done. If nothing else, this is a great opportunity to get a head start on Spring Cleaning.
Millennials Are the Cleanest Generation
While universally people recognize the importance of cleaning for a houseguest, millennials are the most likely to detox their home entirely. Nearly 70% clean their house from top to bottom – compared to 57% of baby boomers. They are also the most likely to change the bedsheets both before and after the guest’s stay. Millennials may get a bad rap for being lazy, but when it comes to cleaning their priorities are in check.
What About Our Beloved Pets?
One thing hosts are not willing to budge on is their pets. We’re willing to go above and beyond in everything from cleaning to itinerary planning to ensure our guests have the perfect stay – but when it comes to our beloved furry family members, we draw the line. Only around a third of people say they would make accommodations for a houseguest that has a pet allergy.
Hosting houseguests is a chance to spend more personal time with people you probably don’t get to see often. This is something you should always keep in mind when preparing for their visit. You may get overwhelmed by all of the added chores on your to-do list, but in the end, it will all be worth it.
