DO: Accept the fact interracial dating is a normal thing
Back in the days, interracial dating was not as common as it is now. Today you will visit a grocery store and on your way there you will see many interracial couples, their children and it is really not something to look at as strange. Did you know that 15% of the marriages in the entire US lately are actually interracial marriages? Yes, people are getting together no matter their race and the numbers of interracial couples are on a big rise. You must accept the fact that interracial dating is no longer a big deal and if you have never given it a try, you should!
DO: Date the person, not their race
One of the main bases of dating is accepting the person for who they are, not their race or the type of music they listen to. The color of the skin should never play a big part when it comes to deciding whether someone is the right person for you. Their race should not be the reason you wish to know them better. You can be loving their skin color, but never make it the only thing you love about them. Talk to them, ask them about their dreams, ideas, and plans for the future – those are the things that matter.
DO: Share your background knowledge and beliefs
At times, people are too shy or afraid to talk about beliefs, traditions simply because they do not want to get into the conflict. If you are dating a person of another race, talk to them about their culture, traditions, and beliefs, get to know how it all works for them and respect their beliefs as you do your own.
DON’T: Dating for babies
You might want a baby that will feature the same skin color as North West, but seriously, do not make it the only reason why you want a child. Do not pick your partner simply because they feature a different skin color than you and you believe it would help you get a beautiful baby. Get to know your partner, love them for who they are before anything else.
DON’T: Keep it a secret or be a secret
If you have been dating someone for quite a while and you still did not get to meet their friends or family – that is suspicious. Do not allow anyone to keep you as a secret. You deserve someone who is honest and proud to have you around, not someone who wants to hide you and never show you to anyone else around them.
DON’T: Take curiosity as a bad thing
When having an interracial relationship, one of you will surely be asking many questions. These questions are pure curiosity, their wish to know more and it is not something you should get mad about. It is good your partner wants to know it all about you, your culture and beliefs. If their questions become too uncomfortable for you to handle, just let them know why and they will understand. Do not be punishing your partner after every single question they end up asking, if you do, they will be afraid to talk about anything and ask things they should be asking.
Just because someone features a different skin color and follows different beliefs in life, does not make them better or worse than anyone else out there. We are all human beings made out of flesh and bones, our skin color only speaks of our families and origins. We all need to work, eat, educate, sleep, love and be loved. If you want to have an amazing relationship with a person of a different race, make sure you keep it all in your mind. Do not forget to love them for who they are and never pick them just because of their race only.
