I’ve got a message for white evangelicals from a white woman who ALMOST got the Rev suffix to my name and in the spirit of redneck comedy – this one is for you:
If your white privilege has lead you to forget that Jesus was a brown skinned middle eastern new and an immigrant – you might be a hypocrite.
If you think my mental health should be silently kept in a prayer closet and forget that Jesus himself suffered the torches of the damned in the wilderness and questioned God forsaking him in his last breath, that his close friend committed suicide, that Peter had a panic attack and ran away and that Thomas was a negative doubter fraught with anxiety – you might be a hypocrite.
If you say your pro – life but do not include those who are born, those in babies in cages at the border, kids in foster care, youth that are homeless and any and all human life that you seem as less worthy than yours – you might be a hypocrite. .
If you title 10% of your income to your house or worship but refuse to help the bodies inside and outside of the church – you might be a hypocrite
If you say there is no make nor female in Christ but refuse to honor that scripture by judging other gender terms – you might be a hypocrite.
If you have your own sin but still throw stones at those who’s sins are different from yours – you might be a hypocrite.
If you believe that you are more righteous than others but forget that Jesus hung out with the marginalized, the drunkards, the gluttons and the whores – you might be a hypocrite.
If you only love those who love you but forget that Jesus told you empatheicalky that means nothing – you might be a hypocrite.
If you deny the right to universal health care when Jesus said it was the sick that needed a doctor not the well – you might be a hypocrite.
If you blame other religions for killing your savior without remembering that Jesus himself chose the cross – you might be a hypocrite.
If you think women are less- than and fail to recall that the last people to Jesus alive and the first to see him risen were women – you might be a hypocrite.
If you embrace the prosperity gospel and tune in on Sunday’s to watch a multi millionaire preach who wont share a dime with the poor but cannot hear Jesus shouting from the mountaintop that a man cannot worship both God and Money – you might be a hypocrite.
If you think someone must change who they are to be saved but worship the same Jesus who told everyone to come as they are and be changed by his grace and mercy – you might be a hypocrite.
If you want to take away services from the poor and still get into heaven but y’all don’t listen to Jesus word that the first will be last and the last will be first – you might be a hypocrite.
If you shame pregnant teenagers and men for raising a child that isn’t there own, not recalling that Jesus’ Mama and Papa did the same thing – you might be a hypocrite.
If you are a member of a church that spews hate and division instead of love and inclusion – you might be a hypocrite.
If you seek to defend your toxic masculinity with scripture but forget that Jesus had long hair, wore a dress, lived with 12 men and his best friend was a woman – you might be a hypocrite.
If you go to a church that embodies hatred and fuels opposition without referencing the scripture that Jesus told y’all he couldn’t hear you if you were angry and that you should just go home and deal with your attitude first – you might be a hypocrite.
If you think you own the right to be forgiven without forgiving others first. If you think their mistakes and shortcomings are bigger than yours, if you refuse to love the neighbour you don’t know, if you protect degenerant clergy, leaders and those in authority – you have done a great disservice to those of us who embrace the radical reckless, ever abiding love of God for ALL. And you are undoubtedly a hypocrite!
