“Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know.”
~ Pema Chödrön

Four years. Forty-eight menstrual cycles. Forty-eight “two week waits.”

Forty-eight silent, body-shaking, heart-wrenching sobbings in the shower, run hot to hide the swollen redness of my distraught face from my husband.

We did everything we knew how to do. Standard therapy, non-conventional methods, seemingly everything and we still weren’t pregnant.

Why?

We had no trouble getting pregnant with our first son when he was two years old we wanted to be pregnant again but despite conceiving him after only three months of trying, we were now at the four-year mark wanting to complete our family. We researched, we prayed, we wondered. Our heads spun, trying to understand.

As a pediatric and pregnancy chiropractor, I have extensive training and professional study and practice on the nervous system, endocrine, and immune systems. My husband, a spinal rehabilitative corrective chiropractor, also extensively trained and equally health focused in how we lived our lives. To anyone who knew us would say we were the healthiest couple they could think of. So why weren’t we pregnant?

Surely we weren’t alone.

Through our research we found that one in six couples struggle with infertility worldwide. One in four women and one in four men have a primary factor creating an inability to conceive. Like many of these people, we went to the internet several times to seek guidance on this journey but became overwhelmed by all the conflicting information and advice available.

One particular spring day, the Alaskan sun shining through my window was in direct contrast to the torrential storms I felt in my heart. I had been weeping and just sat in front of my computer, lost as to which direction to go. I could barely make out a prayer: “Please, please. I have no idea what to do. I’ve done all I can. I know you have put it in my heart to have another child…and I know you have the power to help. I will accept your will, but I have to do all I can first. Please…please. Guide me.”

When I opened my eyes, the sun was still bright, but now I felt peace in my heart. I typed something on Google and Gabriela’s website stood out. I opened it. At first I was skeptical, but then I read her qualifications and consumed all the information she provided freely. I realized despite everything I knew, Gabriela already had a track record and experience along two decades in helping couples in my very situation.

I was tired of the “get pregnant fast” schemes. I knew anything I pitched to my husband would have to have some serious research and clout behind it, so I scheduled a phone call to Gabriela’s team alone to do a scouting call, and prayed he’d be open to listening, too.

I don’t know what I was expecting but Gabriela got me to do more work and answer more questions before I so much as spoke to her than I had been asked to do in four years struggling through infertility. I thought, “finally someone is listening!”

Gabriela had an effective process to qualify if we were a good match for working together. I was impressed. However, when she said that we wouldn’t even be trying for a baby for at least 3-6 months, and given our specific circumstances it could even be closer to a year, I was disheartened. I knew this wouldn’t be a “quick fix,” but when I understood the “why” behind those recommendations I was ready to comply.

When we look back at our lives, I feel like most of us have very few “whatever it takes,” “all or nothing” moments or decisions to act upon. Unless someone has known intimately the pain of infertility, I would say that the category of creating a healthy human being doesn’t command as many accolades as, say, starting a billion-dollar empire from scratch, winning a Nobel prize, or finding a cure to a rare disease.

However…for those of us who have suffered the pain of infertility through years of disappointment and heartbreak…I would venture to guess that none of those other earthly accolades or accomplishments would bring as much joy as the simple and quiet “positive” on a home pregnancy test. We decided that we would do “whatever it took.”

We committed to ourselves and we gave it our all.

Was it easy? By no means. It took dedication, patience, tears, frustration, and even more patience. It took pain, anger, laughter, and long-suffering. But the support and guidance were amazing and with it we stayed the course, and in due time and with much work that unique moment, looking at my positive pregnancy test became a reality once more.

I had an elaborate plan as to how I was going to share the news with my husband, but I ruined it all by laughing and jumping up and down whilst on the phone with our local doctor who confirmed my Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) numbers to be truly pregnant.

We wanted our son Isaius to be the first to know about the pregnancy. On the day of his sixth birthday, we took him to our 20-week ultrasound. The sonographer turned on the machine and an image popped up of his sister. We said, “Happy birthday, buddy! Do you know what that is?” He said, in his sweet six-year-old squeaky voice, “Is that a baby?? It’s a baby! Mom! You’re going to have a baby!?? I’m a big brother!!” We could hardly contain our joy, and gave him the job of telling the rest of our families.

A few months later, our beautiful daughter Isliana was born, six and a half years after her brother. To see the two of them is like seeing my very own fertility puzzle made whole. They were truly made for each other. The first words out of his mouth when he saw her was, “I prayed for her. Mom, you did a great work.” To this day, even though sometimes he remembers “the good old days, when it was just mom, dad, and me…before my baby sister destroyed my Legos!” he loves that he is a big brother and our family is complete.

All the pain, tears, suffering, and sorrow were replaced with elation, happiness, and a quiet peace that fills my soul.

“Whatever it takes,” with God’s will and Gabriela’s team, was enough for us. Gabriela was kind to remind us that no matter what happened, we needed to be happy right where we were. That way of considering life and its challenges, including this one, in and of itself brought me perspective.

Gabriela and her team do not promise the world, but to my family and me they over-delivered in terms of helping me find myself and my strength again along my struggles. And as I see baby, after baby, after baby being born to those under her care, I see in each the miracle of an answered prayer as it was for me.

I encourage you to feast upon Gabriela’s work. Use highlighters, take notes, come back again and again to soak up her wisdom and evidence-based prescriptions giving life to the words she shares in this book.

Whether you will use this book simply, as one of Gabriela’s recommendations suggests, to live your best life now and/or to also improve your current chances of getting pregnant, I know the fact you are holding this book is already a blessing. Now it is up to you. Be sure to put it to good use.

Our evolutionary bodies (that’s right they are not modern) need certain ingredients; real food, sunshine, sleep, connection, clean water and movement as the basics in order to express health.  Infertility and miscarriage occur not because of one thing, there are many things, it’s looking at the body as a whole and not just testes, ovaries and uterus. Gabriela Rosa’s book, Fertility Breakthrough brings you back to what’s important, to explore the root cause of a complex issue and empower individuals and couples to take complete charge of their life and health. This book will not only help with a successful pregnancy but improve the chances of a healthy child.

Gabriela Rosa has invested decades to develop and continuously fine tune an approach to fertility treatment that is a much needed paradigm shift for couples experiencing reproductive challenges. As a scientist, I am concerned with adequate methods to reach effective results and in Gabriela’s latest book Fertility Breakthrough, couples will find a comprehensive, scientific, evidence-based guide to understanding how to change their results. Gabriela’s book speaks to the core of why many couples may struggle for years to have a baby, but most importantly how they can take matters in their own hands to overcome all previous difficulty and reach their most desired outcome of a healthy baby. I wholeheartedly recommend Gabriela’s work to couples all over the world.
