This poem I wrote was inspired by the great poet, Wistawa Szymborska.
I picked up a collection of her poetry at one of my favorite cafes in Boulder—Innisfree—after returning from Bali.
When I posted this video on Facebook, it was received beautifully, so I thought it would be a good idea to share it up on Elephant.
While writing this, the questions that came through seemed to pour out effortlessly. In the middle of writing, I would pause between each question, without seeking the right answer.
Oftentimes, that is the greatest mistake we make: seeking the answer to every question we ask, instead of accepting the space of unknowing as a space of immense grace and wisdom—which inspired another poem of mine called, “Divine Intimacy:”
Who has asked a question
and looked for the answer?
That looking is a sure way
To bury yourself in the dirt
of a temporary dream.
Who has asked a question and
drowned in the mystery of it?—
Been terrified by its depth and
spaciousness? That humility is an
invitation for the source, a doorway
through which a cracked hand may pull us
out of two worlds and into one, an
edge that makes sense, but only
to the feet now tingling
with the feeling of finality.
It is my hope that this poem touches you in some beautiful and profound way, with softness, perspective, and a stroke of tender-loving care. If you’d like to read the written form of it, you can find it here.
