Catchy title.
What does it mean?
I was surprised this morning, to find that this phrase had its beginnings as a rally cry and mantra for the basketball team, the Philadelphia 76ers.
I also found an article from Psychology Today, talking about slowing down, relaxing and not striving so hard. I agree, there is great benefit in enjoying the process, but what about the word Trust?
I found the question “How can we trust the universe?” which was answered with the Bible verse Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust God…” But do you?
What does it really mean to Trust?
Perhaps the most telling question I saw, was “How can I trust the process and not stress?” This is a beautiful statement of how most of us feel.
We often find ourselves sitting on a razor’s edge, wanting to trust and at the same time worrying. Clearly these two emotions cannot co-exist. Thus, there is a battle in our minds.
In order to end the battle, let us see what trust really means.
According to the Oxford dictionary,
trust is “firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something.“
A “firm belief.” Something you know to be true.
What are we having a firm belief in? The Process.
What is a Process?
Let us go to Oxford again.
process is “a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.“
A “series of steps.”
Notice there is no requirement in a process, to know ahead of time what the steps are. All we know is that the series of steps will achieve a particular end.
What end?
You decide. It’s your choice, where your steps will lead you. Having made that choice, you now know what your firm belief is in.
It is in the knowing that your steps, whatever they may be, will lead you to your chosen particular end.
Who will choose your steps?
You will. In fact, you have chosen every single one of your steps in life. And you will continue to do so.
It’s true, life tells us the available choices, at any given moment. From those choices, you choose your next step.
And now we know who the someone is, in your trust. Your trust is in You.
You are the one creating the choices and choosing your next step. To what end? To the end you chose.
So, can you trust the process and not stress?
Of course, you can. Because you know, You are in control every step of the way. And you know that your steps, whatever they turn out to be, are leading you to your chosen end.
