Reflections Of A Pandemic {Poem}

We observed images around the world in horror

Streets were deserted but hospitals bursting

We didn’t realise this would become our mirror

The gradual daily increase was just the first thing

The numbers kept rising along with the panic

And our Prime Minister instructed us to stay at home

Shopping for pasta and toilet roll was manic

Contact with loved ones became by zoom or phone

We clapped and we cheered on a Thursday night

A whole nation united from two metres apart

So proud of our key-workers continuing the fight

Looking on in despair at each new official chart

Kids don’t go to school instead they play in the park

People wear face masks and they don’t touch

We spread out in gardens to socialise until dark

Who knew we’d miss human contact this much

And so this has become our normal life now

A forever racing world forced to stop and rest

They say society will resume but we’re unsure how

Moving forwards not back will be the next test

But we’ll adjust our sails and we’ll adapt

It’s true that we’ve realised the value of health

And time spent with loved ones no doubt about that

Because in the end there really is nothing else.
