Don’t do it.
I know you’re stressed. I know your mind is running a million miles an hour and how calming you think just one sip of wine would be.
I know there’s nowhere else to escape to. I know your mind is the only activity happening now in lockdown, but please, don’t silence it.
I know you’ve had a long day. Or maybe a boring one. There’s always an excuse, isn’t there?
I know you think, what’s the worst that could happen? Sometimes, one drink is just one drink. But remember all the other times it wasn’t?
I know you are tired, lonely, want to watch the latest episode of “Married At First Sight Australia” with something to get the buzz going, but please…
Don’t have that drink.
Go for a walk instead. Go to the grocery store as a reason to get out of the house. Put on a podcast, and even though it’s raining, you’ll feel good for going outside.
Call a friend. Talk to them about whatever it is you’re dealing with.
Do yoga. Lay down your mat. Get into cozy clothes and wrap your body in a blanket. Candles. Soothing music.
But don’t have that drink.
Whatever your reason for wanting to not drink—maybe it’s just today, maybe you’re trying to be sober on weekdays, maybe you’re going cold turkey—you can do this.
Think of how good you’ll feel in the morning. Think of how your future self will thank you.
There are a million things that will calm that anxiously beating heart, and you and I both know a drink is not one of them.
