John F. Kennedy’s reminder of choosing the harder road

“But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the Moon…We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard!”

-JFK at Rice University in 1962 during his We Choose to Go the Moon speech which helped fuel America’s space exploration

Whether it’s choosing between cooking healthy foods at home which we can order online these days vs. ordering from Ubereats, we’re all guilty of sometimes choosing the easier path. We oftentimes forget about the benefits of taking the longer, less convenient or more difficult road in our daily life. Examples of ways we all fall to the path of least resistance are endless: watching the best shows on Netflix vs. picking up that book on our nightstand; joining in the latest political food-fight on Twitter vs. talking with a person of an opposing viewpoint with the goal of implementing solutions. Many people tend to choose the easy path…the path of least resistance (which isn’t always the wrong road), but choosing so all the time will likely yield less positive outcomes.

Even the best of us often choose the easier roads to travel on rather than choosing the right roads even if the terrain is a little bumpier. That said, don’t forget to enjoy yourself on this short journey through life including the occasional easier path (succumbing to that whole pint of Halo top ice cream). But remember, it’s smart to remind ourselves that taking the right road tends to be a longer journey overall even if there is a bit of friction or bumps on the road, benefits that include living a longer life through eating healthy eating choices and routine exercise, building high-quality relationships through commitment and understanding, personal-growth through consistent learning, lasting business success through smart well-timed market launches, etc.). It requires daily effort, but we can all strive to choose the best path, from the most consequential roads in life to the daily decisions that contribute in a meaningful way to the bigger picture. Choose to pick up the book on your nightstand instead of watching episode 283 of The Office.

To reinforce this life principle, have friends and family keep a close eye on the roads we’re traveling on as often as possible since the people closest in our lives are the ones who know the unique “traveler” best of all…Feel free to find other nuggets of inspiration at GoCheezy.
