I stopped watching the news about 10 years ago when I was going through a bitter divorce. I was in a war zone, facing another landmine on almost a daily basis. I would sit down at the end of the day with a glass of wine or what I called “my coping juice” to watch the evening news as every good, concerned citizen should. Even with the wine, this was more than I could take. Trying to process the doom and gloom that the media is all too willing to deliver was just too much to bear.

It was at this time, that I realized that I am an empath. Meaning that I pick up on other people’s energy good or bad and at times can feel their emotions. This probably explains why my entire life I hated being in large crowds and never liked watching the news. Both of those scenarios can put me into a whirlwind of emotions and feelings that are not mine. It took me years to realize that including many attempts at being at amusement parks, concerts, and sporting events. So for me, watching bad things happen to good people and the intentional fear the news tries to generate make it very difficult for me to watch.

I will be honest and say that I have not been reading every news article, blog post or news broadcast regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. I have many friends and colleagues that are astonished by this and think that I am being reckless and am in denial. Actually, that is far from the truth.   I simply refuse to buy into and take part in the hype. I see this situation from a far more topical view. I choose to focus on the meaning behind this and what it means for humanity.

It is clear to me, that the pandemic is a wake-up call. Perhaps, God put his mighty hand on the earth and said “stop and reset now!” Maybe he saw what we couldn’t or weren’t willing to see? We were too busy for that. Running to jobs to achieve success and running children to schools and activities for their future success.   Staying home and being together is no longer considered a measurement of success.

What happened to us? Did it take the loss of millions of lives for us to finally look within and to each other? Did it take being told that you cannot leave your home to make you finally stay there? Did it take the closure of schools to make us spend time with our children? Did it take no longer being able to go to the workplace for us to see that we can be just as productive from home? Did the pursuit of education and success take us away from what is really important?

Each generation can be defined by its’ hardships. Some have been witness to war, while others have endured social injustice and some have even withstood financial devastation. Perhaps this generation will be defined not by the pandemic but by the massive reset of our lives. Maybe now success means being at home with the people you love.

They say something good always comes from everything…even the Covid Pandemic. If that’s so, then people 100 years from now will thank us and appreciate what we went through. And perhaps we will be known as the generation that started the massive reset. The reset for society to slow down, stay home, and spend more time with family and close friends. Maybe just maybe when people think back about this time it will be from the comfort of their own homes surrounded by the people that they love.
