Why would I ask such a question? I must be out of my mind, some may ask.
But it is really a bad idea? Think of it. We are reeling in the shadow of a blockbuster Oprah sit down with Harry & Meghan, Duke & Duchess f Sussex. Accusations of racism & intimidation flying around. Public figures, opportunists & commentators losing their culture pearls over Meghan’s audacity to speak out.
The lack of deference is so sickening if it wasn’t so transparently feckless, and might I add, reckless. Why make a big deal about it? Because in 2021 Black Lives Matter. Indigenous Lives Matter. South Asian Lives Matter. Asian Lives Matter. We are under attack.
It is not hyperbole. But, a lived reality. Like a slow-moving tsunami. Occupying. Drowning, saturating everything it touches.
Is this the world we want our children & their descendants to inherit?
And BTW it has also happened to me, the musings about the complexion of my unborn half-Quebecer, Quarter-Black, Quarter-Indian baby. The PTSD & post-partum depression. The doubts & fears about impending motherhood amplified by the omnipresent scrutiny I’d felt from myself & others.
I never repeated what was said & who said it to me. We had (like any other family) some moments of tension & miscommunications. Misunderstandings & forgiveness. Appreciation & Respect. We gave one another lots of space & focused more on the love we had for each other through our boys.
But no matter how many years had passed, those words never went away. I knew that I would love our boys, no matter their hue, but now I had to wonder about the way the world would see them, and more importantly, how they would see themselves.
My aim was to raise the future husbands, boyfriends & fathers. And knowing what I know now, I knew that I had to tell them the raw & honest truth about who their people are. I made it a point to maintain a fluid & ongoing conversation about both sides of their genetic pool.
They took a keen interest. One of my sons self identifies as a Trini-Canadian & the other one as A mixed-race Canadian.
They are a product of the legacy of the Royal family. My Maternal ancestors fought in the war of 1812 for the Fifth Company of the Corps of the Colonial Marines under Vice-Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane. Land grants were given for land in the British West Indies & some Marines also emigrated to Quebec in the Eastern Townships. I also had Maternal ancestors who fought for the American Patriots. They remained in the United States.
My Paternal ancestors came from India to Trinidad. They worked on sugar cane plantations & were recruited to do other kinds of menial work. I don’t know much about them but I know about the arduous four-month-long journey, where sickly coolies (as they were called) were thrown overboard. And others who died en route were discarded in a way anathema to the traditions of Hinduism & Islam.
I am here by God’s grace & by virtue of the courage & resilience of my ancestors.
In order for Canada to get the Monarchy out of our Government, we’ll have to create a Republic. Engaging each province in the writing of a constitution or an edict. Consulting every facet & discipline that could touch our lives. To give you a scope of the work involved consider the following partners.
Entrepreneurs, Artists, Scientists & researchers, Engineers, Architects, Law Enforcement, Environmentalists, Horticulturists, Trainers, Sports & physical therapy professionals, Educators, Filmmakers, Marketing professionals, Real estate experts.
Animal Rights Activists, Indigenous Tribes, Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Forensic Scientists, Forensic Auditors, Accountants, Financial advisors, Chess masters, Journalists, Writers, Poets, Astronauts, Politicians & other sectors but you get my point.
It will take years to achieve any semblance of an agreement & not to mention the opposition from Federalists & Monarchists. The British Royal Family has a far reach & an ample war chest to match. Funded mainly from the trans-Atlantic slave economy, other acquisitions & repossessions throughout the Monarchy’s 1000+ history.
It is difficult work. It will not come cheaply. Non-plus. There are many political considerations to debate & ideologies will vary. The world is ever-changing & every faction wants an advantage. Security for the future will be paramount. Why not get in on the ground floor and agree to join forces with a shared goal for what the future of Quebec the country would look like.
The alternative is BIPOC individuals being left on the outside of political calculations, looking in. Become a cyclical punching bag for language, religious & culture wars. Preference & deference given to some & not to others. Having to rely on the whims of political parties who do not have their best interest & seeing them pushed down on the priority totem pole.
There is no progress without pain. No growth without calculated risk. No future without complications. And no shared prosperity without unification. It’s up to the BIPOC communities of Quebec to decide once & for all how we can organize. Strategize. Pivot if we must, but use whatever political capital we have & harness it.
One thing is for certain at one point or another every member of the commonwealth will want a divorce from the Monarchy. We aren’t buying the ‘We are very much not a racist family.’ We’ve been waiting for proof to the contrary for centuries. The more time passes, the more a sea of homogeneity in the Royal family is inarguable apparent. Instead of a sea of change.
You are not representing us Ma’am & our tax dollars should not be used to subsidize your opulent lifestyles when we have much work to do for our heirs.
With Respect.
Your Humble servant.
