Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is commonly used as a spice in human diets, but it is also used as a medicine, a preservative, and a perfume in many Indian and few asian countries. It contains a minimum piperine content of 95% compared to the 3-9% and 3- 5% found in raw forms of Piper nigrum and Piper longum, respectively. Our Ayurveda has been using piper and other herbs as trikatu to enhance the bio-availability of many poor absorption ayurvedic medicines. Vitaminhaat’s Ashwagandha with piperine (black pepper) is helpful in stress management.
Piperine is a standardized extract from the fruits of Piper nigrum L. (black pepper) or Piper longum L and has many benefits like:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antinociceptive
- Antiarthritic effects
- Bio-Availability Enhancers
Piperine is a standardized extract from the fruits of Piper nigrum L. (black pepper) or Piper longum L. (long pepper). An extract of the active phenolic component, piperine, is well known to provide beneficial physiological effects [6]. It stimulates the digestive enzymes of pancreas, protects against oxidative damage, lowers lipid peroxidation, and enhances the bioavailability of a number of therapeutic drugs. In addition, its anti-inflammatory activities have been demonstrated in rat models of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, cotton pellet-induced granuloma, and a croton oil-induced granuloma pouch [7]. Constituents of the piper species have shown in vitro inhibitory activity against the enzymes responsible for leukotriene and prostaglandin biosynthesis, 5-lipoxygenase and COX-1, respectively [8]. These effects of piperine seem to be beneficial for inflammatory diseases that are accompanied by severe pain; for example, rheumatoid arthritis.
In conjunction with other pungent Ayurvedic herbs, Piperine increased the bioavailability of a number of drugs by promoting their absorption and/or protecting them from being metabolized in their first passage through the liver. Piperine is a highly acclaimed, and some patented form of Black Pepper Extract, clinically shown to be a powerful bioavailability enhancer. Piperine significantly improves the bioavailability of all the key ingredients through increased absorption.
