I wrote this piece to pay homage to my inner wild thing. The young girl who still lives within me. It is a reminder that the joy of play is essential to connection, creativity and our own outward expression. I hope it helps you remember yours too.
The Wild Things
There was never any room for nonsense when your eyes, your ears, your skin and nose were fully engaged.
It was the place we went when our hearts needed un-caging. And whether we were running to it or standing still to take it all we knew it was the wildness that brought us calm.
Every ounce of our imagination was used and not one idea was shot down. Everyone chipping in with a “what if we do this” or “let’s go there”. It was the energy of wonder and action that kept stoking the flame of our inner wildness.
It didn’t matter if you got dirty, smelled of sweat, or your hair was tousled. When we were in nature we were no longer civilized or made up. We had met our match and it beckoned us to come and be the wild things that we are.
There is a peace that overwhelms the soul when that wildness calls to your inner wild thing. It can be felt when you’re alone as well as when you’re with others. No word has to be exchanged or uttered when it happens.
Deep gratitude swells within you each time you are there. You are fully present in its radiant beauty. That type of beauty that only the wild things can see, sense and engage.
