The Power of One Word

How will I EVER get over this?

How many of you in the heat of the moment have caught yourself saying something to the effect of this? Perhaps your partner said something out of turn that triggered something from your past. Perhaps traffic was at a standstill and delayed your commute to an important meeting. Whatever the case, at the time you’re feelin’ them doomsday-sized feels of epic porportion. It stings!

Lemme ask you this…

How you you feel when you say, “How will I ever get over this?”

Seriously, take out a pen and paper and write that shit down. “How will I ever get over this?” And then read it out loud. And breathe.

What comes up?

What emotions are you feeling? Any sensations? Where are you feeling them? Where do they live in your body? How intense are those sensations on a scale of 1 – Justin Bieber (play along and pretend like Bieb’s is super intense…)

And lastly, what do you want to do with those likely-to-be negative, ill-harboured feelings?

Here is a quick language fix I use with my Music Fit Method© artist-athletes called the “One Word Game”. I use it to immediately de-escalate the situation and allow for a clearer mind to navigate their situation effectively.

Scratch out the word ever. That’s right. One word.

“How will I get over this?”

Now, read it back. And breathe.

What changed?

When we use language that dramatizes the situation (ie: ever) we place ourselves in a sense of permanance. That’s likely going to cause a real “stuck” feeling in our minds. And, when we feel stuck, we lose hope.

Lose the drama, slow down, breathe. Keep moving forward. You’ll find a way to get over it.
