Roses are perhaps the most iconic flower, backed with years of romance and symbolism. Their sweet scent and wide array of colors makes this flower an all-around favorite. But, some cities are better for growing this classic flower than others.
The team at Spring Hill Nurseries used a series of ranking factors to determine the best cities for planting a rose garden. The team gathered data for the following factors associated with cultivating a successful plot of roses: total average summer temperature, total average growing season, average summer precipitation, average hours of sunlight in the summer, and the USDA zone of that city’s most populated zip code.
Florida cities topped the charts, with Tampa and Jacksonville tying for first place in the ranking of the best U.S. cities for rose gardens. These cities receive plenty of rain and are protected from the cold of the North and unbearable heat of the South.
Rounding out the top 5 cities in the U.S. for growing roses are Phoenix, AZ, Tucson, AZ, and Houston, TX. The balance of rain, sunshine, and a shorter frost window create the perfect conditions for Grandiflora Roses to thrive in those locations.
Believe it or not, the rose isn’t only suited for warm weather gardens. Cold hardy rose varieties of the flower, like the Pink Freedom Rose, are actually better suited for colder climates. The Distant Drums Floribunda Rose and the Nearly Wild Shrub Rose can live in most USDA zones across the country.
So, whether you’re an experienced gardener or learning to acquire a green thumb, roses may be a good choice for your garden.
