Each of us, in our own way, is in search of something greater, or that can give our lives greater meaning. We’re longing to become whole. A valuable path to discover universal meaning, which I call mysticism, is through Mindfulness.
Too often, we let ourselves become pre-occupied with looking for answers from outside of ourselves. We turn to distractions, stimulants, materialism and every possible diversion we can find that will give us the high, the rush, the peak experience or the feeling of ecstasy we’re longing for.
Practicing Mindfulness centers our focus within and helps us to look at life differently. It holds us in present moment awareness, as if whispering in our ear, “Stay here in this moment and look more deeply into what you’re seeing. You’ll see much more than just what’s on the surface.”
The more present we are, the more aware we are; and the more aware we are, the more present we are. It keeps evolving from there. By being in this state of complete awareness, we can remain observant of our thoughts and feelings with acceptance and non-judgment because we have a heightened awareness of what’s occurring in our minds.
Think of Mindfulness as an innate superpower. It’s like having metacognition. This is when we’re in a pure state of mind, and it’s in this state that we can guide ourselves wisely, pointing ourselves in the right direction instead of one that can be hurtful or harmful to us.
Yes, life can be complicated for sure, but it takes getting out of our own way, and out from under all of the drama we constantly create, to stop and look at the pure, simple beauty of something. The mystical is there. It’s both on the surface and way beyond it, but we’ll miss it again and again because we don’t set our gaze where we need to look.
The mystical experience isn’t something that can only be experienced by mystics. It’s available for all of us to have, if we’re open to it. When we’re open to receive the mystical, and to step into the “union with reality,” we become unburdened with the pressures of the external world. We can go inward and say, “I’m ready to know you. I’m ready to take you into myself. I’m ready to become you.” In essence, self-surrender is offering ourselves to the mystical.
Here is a visualization meditation to connect to the spiritual shift that reveals the mystical plane that we seek.
1. Close your eyes and take some deep, centering breaths.
2. Imagine yourself sitting on top of a white, fluffy cloud.
3. Extend your hand out, and imagine it being touched by God or a Divine presence (similar to Michelangelo’s painting, “The Creation of Adam”)
4. Feel yourself receiving a holy transmission.
5. Imagine it moving through your entire body as though you’re becoming filled with white light.
6. Imagine this white light moving up from the soles of your feet and permeating out from the crown of your head.
7. Give yourself to the transmission.
There are many sacred truths for us to realize on this mystical life journey. As we surrender to our most authentic selves, and keep surrendering in the days to come, more truths shall be revealed to us, and our divine light will be illumined even more brightly.
