Getting Started with Helicopter Pilot Training

Learning to fly a helicopter can seem like a daunting prospect, but it can also be a very rewarding and exciting experience. There are several different job possibilities that become available once you have your helicopter pilot’s license, as well as a number of recreational activities that you can enjoy with your family and friends. If you are not yet sure if getting a helicopter pilot’s license is something you’re interested in, try going on a discovery flight. This gives you the chance to get in the pilot’s chair and find out what you can expect from flight school and what it is like flying a helicopter.

When looking for a reputable flight training school, make sure you know the important details about the flight schools you are looking into. Flight training schools can be certified under one of two standards, FAR Part 61 and FAR Part 141. FAR Part 141 requires stricter standards to be met in order to receive the certification, including additional training and passing inspection by highly skilled Certified Flight Instructors (CFI’s). While both types of schools offer high level training, FAR Part 141 schools have more detailed and advanced training. When making a decision as to which school you want to attend, make sure to inquire as to which level of certification they have, as well as the flight and training hours of their instructors.

Having to cover the same material multiple times can be a very frustrating experience. In order to avoid having to relearn forgotten details, try to keep a regular schedule of training sessions, preferably at least twice a week. This helps keep things fresh in your mind, so that you can build on your knowledge with each passing session. Staying consistent with training sessions also helps to keep you motivated to keep going and making progress, increasing your chances of success.

Learning how to pilot an aircraft is not a simple task. Don’t feel discouraged if you encounter trouble along the way. Helicopters are particularly difficult to master, and can take additional effort to learn how to fly. Staying consistent and working diligently is the best method for long-term success.
