Qualities of a Strong Artist

Art is a part of the fabric of humanity. It first began on prehistoric cave walls and humans have been making it ever since. Art, as we know it today, seems mysterious and complex. While there isn’t one fool-proof method to artistic success, there are traits most successful artists share.

1. Persistence

Artists must persist through personal or professional challenges to attain success. They must be willing to dedicate time and effort toward learning skills, finishing pieces, creating networking contacts, keeping up with trends, and more. Those who find success are those who don’t give up

2. Patience

Becoming a successful artist is not an overnight process. Artists who want to be successful must have an outlook of calm endurance. This outlook will sustain them through the inevitable highs and lows that come with an art career.

3. Passion

Artistic passion is the drive toward innovation and creation. It is a big part of how artists stay motivated. If you love what you do and are excited by it, you can potentially go far. Having a passion for what they create and put out into the world can be extremely rewarding emotionally and career-wise.

4. Being Adventurous

Being flexible and adventurous is critical to artistic success. Artists can attempt to plan each piece to a T, but it won’t always go the way they thought. Having an adventurous spirit also allows for exploration and movement instead of stagnancy and complacency. Trying new things is rewarding artistically and will also help attract new clients.

5. Discipline

An oftentimes overlooked or under appreciated facet of being artistically successful is discipline. Discipline is the way to reign in and productively use some other traits and skills artists need. It brings focus to the passion to allow continual forward momentum. It’s the voice from within telling you to work on a piece. It’s the wisdom to know which areas to focus on for improvement. It’s being self-aware and dedicated enough to make dreams come to fruition. Having a successful art career is a beautiful thing. It is the accumulation of talent, skill, passion, and shrewd business sense. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.
