- Differentiate yourself from the emotion – sense and locate where the emotion shows up in or around your body and then see if you can close your eyes and breathe into that space. As you breathe into it, send it love, compassion and understanding. Say inwardly to this part of you, “I see you. I’m here for you. You are safe.”
- All emotions are valid – move from criticizing yourself for having so-called negative emotions to validating them. Say aloud, “My feelings make sense. I am feeling (insert emotion) and that is an okay way to feel.”
- Journal on your emotions to find clarity. Some prompts to work with: What are these emotions trying to tell me? Is there anything that I am ignoring that needs to be heard, or seen? What can I do to be more present with and care for my emotions?
- Channel the emotion through movement and/or creative expression. Dance, paint, sing, write, run… emotion is ENERGY IN MOTION. Let it flow through you in a way that feels safe and supportive. Eventually, the emotion will transform in a beautiful way.
