Whether we’re seeking inner peace or global peace or a combination of the two, the way to experience it is to build on the foundation of unconditional openness to all that arises. Peace isn’t an experience free of challenges, free of rough and smooth, it’s an experience that’s expansive enough to include all that arises without feeling threatened.~ Pema Chödrön

It’s important to acknowledge that these are unsettling times, through which we have been and are continuing to navigate, and that as such, we are more and more responsible for our own well-being.

Taking on this responsibility allows us to be empowered in how we respond to what is going on around us. It doesn’t mean we do it alone, it means we are at the center of it for ourselves.

This Dark/New Moon is one of two in March, which makes the second one a Black Moon. There is a relationship between the two which is interesting for us to work with. *Some people will experience Dark Moon on April 1.

At Dark Moon, we are under the influence of the Crone archetype, also known as the Dark Goddess, or the Dark Mother. The darkness is the mystery that supports us on a journey of introspection, as well as the ability to transform what has already occurred in order to make space for new possibilities. People often wonder, how is it possible to change the past? When we can conceptualize the past through a new lens, whatever is born from there on, is born of the transformed view rather than the old view. The past loses its power to harm us and becomes what inspires us.

Pisces hosts the close of the astrological year, another portal for processing the previous year. A powerful water sign, it is the energy that moves us forward while witnessing the past. We look to the past to find perspective. Perspective gives rise to wisdom. The tension created between two highly creative moons in one month is where we can birth new paradigms through such wisdom.

We can all agree that change is on the precipice in the world. What is your perspective on how differently the world is handling this new conflict in Ukraine, as opposed to the pandemic we are just inching out of? My personal observation is that we embodied a lot of division through the pandemic—disagreement about immunization and mandate requirements, while the war has so far seemed to unite the world for peace and protection of a sovereign country.

As the moon and planets shift in the cosmos, varying archetypes are awoken, while others recede into the distance. This creates opportunity for us to work within those archetypes, which is ultimately a chance to expand in our consciousness. What is consciousness anyway? It is awareness—our ability to practice awareness for the good of ourselves and all sentient life.

The archetypes of the Dark Mother, Dark Moon, and Pisces form a triumvirate that helps us to feel into deep, existential questions.

Pisces, a mutable, spiral energy, takes what was initiated and stabilized through Capricorn, and adapts it to current conditions. This is the territory of the emotions and soul, fantasy and reality. Pisces asks:

What ideal can I commit to?

How can I devote myself to service?

How can I support the collective?

How can I burn my karma by transcending (not abandoning) my own needs and envisioning unity?

If we put this against the context of world events, we can see how the timing of this moon is no coincidence. It is just the energy we need to access compassion, empathy, love, peace, and unity. There is always a “death” that occurs to bring us closer to awareness of what is truly important.

Every day we think about the aggression in the world. Everybody always strikes out at the enemy, and the pain escalates forever. We could reflect on this and ask ourselves, ‘Am I going to add to the aggression in the world?’ Every day we can ask ourselves, ‘Am I going to practice peace, or am I going to war?” ~ Pema Chödrön

These are heavy times, without a doubt. Many of us are ricocheting between shock, disbelief, grief, and utter sadness. There is a balance to be achieved between being informed and consuming too much news.

Here are some ways to find center and take responsibility for our well-being:

>> Check in with loved ones and friends whom you can have safe conversations with.

>> Keep boundaries around how much or which information you take in.

>> Take baths with essential oils that support calm such as lavender, rose, bergamot, jasmine. The water element is incredibly grounding as much as it represents flow. When done the bath, sit in the water as it drains and visualize it pulling all heaviness from your body. Feel the gravity working with your lymphatic system, draining toxicity.

>> Sit in a chair with spine straight, feet on the ground, shoulders back and relaxed, take three breaths in of unity, then return that unity to the world on your out-breath.

>> Allow grief and sadness to move through your body—meaning—as it comes toward you, or rises within you, welcome its messaging, feel the grief and sadness, then send it to the heart of Dark Mother through your feet, down a grounding cord to the center of the Earth. Know that Dark Mother will compost how you are feeling into nutrients. Nothing is wasted with Her; everything is an ingredient for new ground, and we don’t need to feel bad for experiencing melancholy.

>> Listen to music. Because it is frequency and vibration, it taps into our subconscious, working with emotion through heart instead of mind.

>> Be of service. This way of grounding keeps things real for us. Committed to another or a cause, the mind and heart find joy and provide joy.

>> Take plenty of time to rest. You can support your body and mental well-being by doing nothing. In fact, some of us are in deep inertia. If that is all your body has the capacity for, so be it.

I would love to hear how you are faring? Do share if inspired. May all be well, Wise Ones.

“When you open yourself to the continually changing, impermanent, dynamic nature of your own being and of reality, you increase your capacity to love and care about other people and your capacity not to be afraid.” ~ Pema Chödrön
