When you think about the greatest music performances of all time, you may think of a number of people. These performances and the people that performed them shaped the lives of so many people who have watched them. Luckily, a ton of them have been chronicled on YouTube or on DVD, so we can watch and rewatch them forever. Below are some of the greatest music performances of all time.
Live Aid
This iconic music performance was a fundraiser that had a billion and a half viewers across the globe, raising 80 million dollars for the famine in Ethiopia and Africa. It took place over two Stadiums, one in London (Wembley Stadium) and one in Philadelphia (Robert F. Kennedy Stadium), and had a cast of a number of musical icons. The head of the fundraiser, Bob Geldof, more than did his part in recruiting a number of notable figures to head this performance.
Many speculations took place during the planning that the Beatles would reunite without John Lennon, or maybe even a Pink Floyd reunion. Though the number of refusals was high, with Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, and Frank Zappa being a few, and unfortunate oversights were had, like Michael Jackson, who wrote a song for the closing ceremony but didn’t perform, the performance was still a resounding success.
One of the most notable performances was Queen’s set, where frontman Freddie Mercury powered his way through “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Hammer to Fall,” “We Will Rock You,” and “We Are the Champions.” It was certainly a night to remember.
Concert for George
In November 2002, George Harrison’s closest friends, family, and peers gave him a final farewell tribute at the Royal Albert Hall. Among this star-studded crew was Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Tom Petty, Ravi, Anoushka Shankar, and his son Dhani.
Anoushka Shankar led the first half of the tribute with an Indian style of music, then gave the stage to the people that George held dear throughout his life. These bands came together and performed hits like “Taxman,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here Comes the Sun,” even “My Sweet Lord.” The Monty Pythons, with Tom Hanks’s help, is even present to help pay tribute to the Beatle.
During the finale, Joe Brown’s version of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” is a performance that not many can keep dry eyes during.
Great music performances are catalyzed by the people who take part in them. These are just a few of the many that could have been listed.
