Best Places in the United States for Camping

A road trip through the United States is ideal when desiring to see some of the most stunning destinations on the planet. Camping remains one of the most cost-effective means of vacationing. Whether traveling by traditional vehicle or RV, campsites abound in every state.

Acadia National Park-Maine
The park encompasses 49,075 acres. The spectacular terrain within the location spans from the coast at sea level to the peaks of mountains. Visitors also encounter miles of natural rivers and streams along with lakes, ponds, and acres upon acres of forest. The national park is also a great destination for fall foliage viewing. Campgrounds are located within close proximity to Bar Harbor, along Seawall, and in the Schoodic Woods. Campground sites become available during the first week in May. However, the popularity of the park requires that reservations be made two months in advance.

Shenandoah National Park-Virginia
The 199,173-acre park was established in the state’s northeastern region and included a portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains along with the Shenandoah River Valley. The 105-mile Skyline Drive remains a well-known route that follows the mountain ridgeline. Nine different waterfalls grace the varied terrain surrounded by lush forests. There are more than 500 miles of trails to explore, which includes 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The park has five main campgrounds that open in April. Depending on the weather, campgrounds remain open through October or November. Shenandoah also welcomes backcountry camping.

Grand Teton National Park-Wyoming
The park lies in the state’s northwestern region and encompasses more than 300,000 acres. The location remains renowned for the 40-mile expanse of the Teton Mountain Range. The mountain range is considered to be the youngest of the Rocky Mountains, and the Grand Teton is the tallest at an elevation of 13,775-feet. The picturesque landscape includes the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Lakes and rivers are found at various elevations. Seven main campgrounds welcome rustic and RV campers. But, backcountry permits are also available. Main sites must be reserved six months in advance. Campgrounds open in late spring and remain open through fall.
