Marty Lancton on Ways to Support Your Local Firefighters

Most individuals hope they never have to have a run-in with the fire department, meaning that they never want to encounter a fire that threatens their safety or damages their property. However, firefighters are a necessity of the community, promoting wellbeing and putting themselves in harm’s way to eradicate fires. After some time, they can begin to feel burnt out and unappreciated in their line of duty. Listed below are some ways to support your local firefighters.

Donate

Although it might seem as if your local fire department has all they need to perform their duties, don’t take this as a sign that they are not in need of donations. As a civilian, you can donate money to worthwhile organizations like the Houston Professional Firefighters Association that help provide financial support and other supplies to their firefighters facing high medical expenses or home repairs, as well as ongoing community efforts. You can also donate training material and other resources to your local fire department to help them in their efforts to protect the community.

Help With Maintenance

Just like our homes are in need of upkeep, fire stations also require general maintenance. You can volunteer your time to assist with any overlooked tasks in the fire station. Perhaps the walls need scrubbing down, the floor needs mopping, or rooms need a fresh coat of paint, etc. You don’t have to have broad experience in these areas to be able to volunteer your services. Firefighters will appreciate your willingness to serve in the areas that they likely don’t have time to tend to.

Join the Fire Department

The fact of the matter is that fire departments are in need of firefighters and other volunteers. Although your local fire department might be abounding with firefighters, there could be one in a neighboring city begging for volunteers. If you don’t have the time or physical ability to volunteer as a firefighter, however, there are various other tasks you can take on by joining the fire department. Fire departments, like many businesses, need people to tackle bookkeeping, fundraising efforts, maintaining a media presence, educating the public and completing regular safety checks to ensure smoke alarms in homes and businesses are in good working condition. Joining the fire department does not mean that you’ll always be climbing ladders up burning buildings. However, volunteering your time in this manner is a foolproof way to offer your support to a worthwhile cause.
